THIS WEEK in 4th Grade
Week Ending September 25, 2009
Religion: We finished our first unit in Religion and have now started on the key families of the Old Testament. Currently we are learning, or reviewing, Isaac and Rebekah.
Spelling: This week we started adding challenge words to our lists. These words coincide with the reading story of the week. They count as extra credit in spelling. We have had 3 challenge words, but it may not always be 3 – there will be weeks when there are only one or two. Also, spellers who score 100% on the pre-test on Thursday will not take the test on Friday.
Language Arts: Complete subjects and predicates.
Reading: We read “ Lou Gehrig” in our reading book this week. We really enjoyed the story about a great athlete.
We also started utilizing our new accelerated reader program. Mrs. Heiden worked with us in the computer lab and we all took at least one quiz. Our goal for the first quarter is to achieve an 85% on each quiz and to have 10 points by Oct. 23. I sent home a letter on Wednesday to parents which explains some of the questions you may have.
Math: We took our first math test this week it was on place value and logical reasoning.
Social Studies:
Science: We also had our first test in science this week. We will be starting the next chapter on animal growth and adaptation.
September Book Report:
This is the bag book report and it is due on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
School Pictures: are over with!
Mr. Z’s – Pick up is on Oct. 7
German Class: The kids are really enjoying this experience and look forward to Monday afternoons!
Class Webpage: I have had a few hiccups this year with my class page and the set up of it. I think Mr. Adams and I have it figured out now and it should be more useful in the next couple of days. Right now I have all of the spelling words through lesson 10 on the website. I will be making a homework tab and a classroom news tab where you can access this newsletter and future newsletters as well. A memory work and fun, yet educational website link page will also be coming…..stay tuned!
Missing Assignments: If your son/daughter does not finish an assignment by the due date he/she will receive a missing assignment slip that needs to be signed by you and returned to me the next day. That slip serves as communication between you and me, it is NOT the consequence. The consequence will be missing recess and possibly additional work on the same subject. Missing assignments slow down the pace of the entire class and interferes with learning. I suggest that students do homework shortly after getting home from school. As a parent, I generally give them about 15-20 minutes of “down time” and then it is homework time. It is hard to do a good job on homework when you are tired or otherwise distracted. I have attached a sheet on good study habits to this newsletter. Not everything is applicable or possible – but there are some good suggestions. Fourth grade is probably the first grade in which there is a regular flow of homework; good habits start NOW.
God’s Blessings on your weekend!
