FEBRUARY
First Grade News
Growing in His Word, Serving in His World,
Joining in His Mission

What a great time of the year. We celebrated our 100th day of first grade on February 3rd. Then came the Valentine’s party on February 12th. It is so fun to watch first graders open their cards and are genuinely excited about the message.
Then we had a Pep Rally to start the tournament week-end. Thanks to all of the parents who volunteered to help out at the tournament. It takes a lot of people to make this work. If you have not helped out please consider it for next year. Too fun!
We now look forward to our Olympics on March 4th, Grandparent’s Day on March 5th and the Talent/Pizza Night on March 6.
We are in the Lenten season and are going to be learning about the path Jesus took for us in the penitent season. We will continue to learn about this special season of our church year.
Right now we are learning about prayer and remembering to say thank you for all the blessings we receive from God. Do you know the children take turns praying at our special Jesus time each day? They are getting very good at it. They look for children to pray for and their own special things they would like to pray about. Very cool!
In reading we are in our fourth book of the year. The children are reading well but need to concentrate on using voice inflection! Please have you child read sentences not words when you listen to them read orally. Comprehension is an important part of reading. Please ask your child questions about what they have read or to summarize the story after it has been read. Help your child be the best reader he/she can be!!

God has richly blessed us in so many ways. We continue to learn how to pray to Him and trust in Him no matter what is happening in our life. We learn our Bible words and read the lessons from our books. Most of us can really read it for ourselves now. Wow!

SOME OTHER THINGS WE ARE DOING:
Math concepts being practiced now are tens and ones and numbers through 100. Can your child write the numbers up to 100 without prompting? This would be a good time to practice this concept. Some children need to practice reading and writing numbers through 100.
Homework pages are from the next chapters in our book about time and money. Please work on these pages with your child. Much of this work is new to your child. Doing this helps us get farther along in the book. We get back to adding and subtracting facts sooner. The homework papers will be graded.
In Phonics, we have finished the short vowels sounds. We are practicing some long vowel sounds and the letter combinations that make these vowel sounds.
Our spelling lessons have been concentrating on vowel patterns that we practice in our reading book. The children have been doing very well on the tests and working diligently when doing the dictation part of the tests.
We are finishing up the Work! Unit in Social Studies. We have learned about needs and wants, why jobs are needed and most importantly—why do we go to school?!? Our next unit is about Our Earth, Our Resources.
Our test for the animal unit in science has been completed. We learned how to classify animals, metamorphosis, and why animals have different coverings. We will now begin working on Unit D about weather, the sky, and seasons.
The Olympics groups have been working very hard on learning about the Olympics and each multi-age group learned about a country that was assigned to them. Next week we will be finishing our posters and other things and get it all ready for Grandparent’s Day.
Please remember to call in when you child is absent from school. Also please send a note to school excusing your child after he/she has been absent. Thank you to those parents who have been following that item from the Parent Handbook.
I would like to ask if there is anyone who would like to help out with Mini-courses. The lower grade teachers lead a group, but the older children in grades 4—8 need some leaders that would teach them a skill. Do you do a craft or skill that you could share? If you have the time and the desire to teach your craft, please contact Mr. Adams ASAP!
