Isaiah 5:1-7, John 15:5

 

What good is a garden that doesn't produce a harvest?  No good at all, unless the gardener can somehow revive the plants and cause them to produce good fruit.  What good does it do for God to have called a people for Himself if they don't produce a harvest of righteousness?  None at all, unless He grafts them into the righteousness of His Son.

"Don't tell me.  Show me.",  "I'll believe it when I see it." , "A picture is worth a thousand words."  We are inundated by a constant stream of words, when the reality is, what we really want to see is action and power.  Then we come to church to worship the God who parted the Red Sea, made the sun stand still, and breathed life into dead bodies, a God of action and power, and all we receive is more words.  Or is it?

At times it seems that nothing in the church is more powerful than the words, "We've always done it that way," and nothing comes so close to the authority of the Word of God in our churches as tradition.  And yet tradition comes and goes like writing in the sand, while the Word of the Lord endures forever.

What is the Bible?  We call it the Word of God; it's flawless and perfect, but also personal and relevant.  Grounded in centuries of history, the ancient documents we call the Word of God speak to the issues of our lives in the twenty-first century, and impact the decisions that we make on a day to day basis.

Ephesians 6:10-18

 

What is the purpose of a Lutheran School?  It is not to shelter our children from the evil in this world - that would be impossible.  Instead, the Lutheran school supports parents in their vital task of equipping children to do battle against the spiritual forces of this age.  Only by wearing the armor that God provides are we prepared to stand against the devil and extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

"Who is Jesus?"  No other question has had a greater impact on world history or on the religions of the world.  No other question has the same power to unite and to divide people.  No other question matters as much.  Who is Jesus, and how does the answer change my life?

What does a preacher say in his last sermon?  He can do no better than deliver the most important message of all, the message of Christ and Him crucified for our sins.  This is the message that all Christians are called to let shine into the world.
