My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less
Sermon from Sunday 10/19/2010
Not Seeing Is Believing
Seeing Is Believing. Or is it? If faith is being certain of what we cannot see, than seeing can't be believing. Instead, believing is knowing God's presence in those moments when you cannot see Him. Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed!
From Nonsense to Perfect Sense (Luke 24:1-12)
Skeptics of today scoff at the resurrection of Jesus. Such things simply do not happen. The story must be nonsense. But Jesus disciples were every bit as skeptical. To them the resurrection seemed like nonsense, too. Until they saw Jesus. And then it made perfect sense. Does Jesus' resurrection make sense in your life? Or, perhaps the better question: Does Jesus' resurrection make sense of your life?
The Parable of the Two Sons (Luke 15:11-32)
One of the most powerful expressions of God's love for His people is found in the story of the prodigal son. But the power of that story makes it easy to miss the fact that there are two sons in that story. And it is the father's love for both of them that makes this a fitting picture of our God's love for each of us.
Two Tragedies (Luke 13:1-9)
How do we respond to tragedy? More than any previous generation, we are aware of the suffering in this world that results from the world's tragedies. But no one is more aware of the reality of that suffering than Jesus. And Jesus calls us to see in tragedy an opportunity to examine ourselves, to repent, and to gratefully receive the forgiveness that He offers to us freely.
His Temptations and Yours (Luke 4:1-13)
There are few moments as dramatic as Jesus' showdown with Satan in the wilderness. Three temptations. Three answers from scripture, and the devil is defeated. But what about your life? Few of us can claim a dramatic showdown with Satan, but does that mean that Satan has been defeated? Or just that we have been deceived?
Go Away? No. Follow me. (Luke 5:1-11)
"Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man." Peter's words ring true. When we recognize our sinfulness it is natural to want distance from God. We do not want His holy eyes looking at our sinful hearts, thoughts, and actions. But Jesus said to Peter, "Do not be afraid." And He says the same to you.
Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-27)
What is the church? What does it mean to be the church? God calls His people into relationship with one another, makes them holy, and unites them into one body. And that has major implications for how we relate and respond to one another in the church.
