Strong Like a Rock

Based on this morning’s Gospel—Matthew 7:21-29

The beauty of today's reading is that it is so easy to understand. It is foolish to build something on sand and expect it to stand firm. It may look nice and sturdy, but the slightest tremor will cause the foundation to crumble out from under it. The firmest foundation upon which to build is rock, and Jesus teaches that he is the rock. If we listen to him and heed his words we are like the wise man who chose to build his house upon a foundation of solid rock.

To illustrate this with your children, practice what happens when things are built on unstable foundations. Find some wooden blocks and practice building towers of varying heights. At first, try building them on a stable surface, such as the floor or a tabletop. Then build some towers on an unstable surface like a large pillow. Compare the two surfaces. Which is sturdier? Which towers stand longest? Which surface allows for the tallest towers?

It has been said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results each time. When we experience times like this it is because our judgment is clouded and we are unable to learn from our mistakes and act differently. At other times we think we've learned, but yet we keep having the same old problems over and over. Have your children ever found themselves in situations like these? When? What happened?

When we build things in our lives it would be good for us to build them on the strong foundation of Jesus Christ. He encourages us to seek his wisdom and live our lives with his guidance. Heeding his words can help us learn things more easily and with a lot less effort. — Rick Adams
